The Riverkeeper Patrol Boat monitors the water quality of the entire Hudson river basin, from its source to the New York Harbor. This summer, Captain Lipscomb will be navigating the Gowanus Canal and the Newtown Creek, Superfund sites still used as storm drains for the sewers and dumps for surrounding construction sites. Measuring the toxicity of these waterways is a grim but urgent task.
John Lipscomb, master and commander of the Patrol Boat since 2000, is on the front line of Riverkeeper’s campaigns. He analyzes the water, transports scientists and keeps tabs on the polluters along the river. Dedicating heart and soul to the preservation of the ecosystem, he has earned the name “Batman of the Hudson” — the perfect guide for an investigation into Gotham’s fragile waterways.
