Marcus Hook is a small refinery town close to Philadelphia. For decades the oil business was the community’s bread and butter, but in December 2011 when the Sunoco refinery shut down, the town was left on the brink of an unprecedented crisis. Renovating his house, ex-refinery worker Michael Manerchia found the remains of the plankhouse of Blackbeard’s mistress. This unexpected discovery gave Manerchia the inspiration to create a pirate festival and in this way bring business back to the town. Treasure chronicles the efforts of a community determined to survive the decline of heavy industry. The town’s future is being written as we speak, but one thing is certain: If Marcus Hook wasn’t born with the refinery, it doesn’t have to die with it either.

HYPOCHONDRIA OF THE HEART (2013)

From a 17th century medical illness to a permanent modern condition, nostalgia fell through the cracks of academic disciplines becoming a hypochondria of the heart to be treated by poets and artists. This poetic meditation on nostalgia focuses around Harvard professor, artist and immigrant Svetlana Boym. Creating art that tells of the longing for a home that no longer exists or perhaps has never existed, Svetlana builds meaning from fragments of memory, taking the audience on a journey through the art and science of nostalgia, celebrating the past layers and sediments of stories surrounding us. Weaving together various new and archival materials, the film delves into the essence of memory, prompting us to ask what is that we see when we reminisce – the past, a theatre or the work of art of our own memory?
